  13.     SAN JOSE, CA -- February 8, 1993 -- Novell Inc. today 
  14. announced a licensing and technology agreement under which 
  15. Network Communications Corporation (NCC) acquires exclusive 
  16. rights to develop and market the hardware-based LANalyzer network analyzer.  
  17.  
  18.     In addition to the LANalyzer product, NCC also acquires 
  19. rights from Novell to use the LANalyzer registered trademark 
  20. for two years, as well as rights to and responsibilities for 
  21. all current LANalyzer sales, service and support.  The 
  22. agreement includes the hardware-based LANalyzer only; Novell 
  23. will continue to develop and market its software-only 
  24. LANalyzer for Windows.

  26.     The two companies have shared technologies since September 
  27. 1991, when they announced they would cooperate to combine LAN 
  28. and WAN analysis capabilities in a single testing instrument.  
  29. This agreement is the outcome of that relationship and of 
  30. Novell's continuing commitment to the software services 
  31. segment of the networking industry.

  33.     Navindra Jain, vice president and general manager of 
  34. Novell's Network Management and Internetworking Products 
  35. Division, said NCC's familiarity with LANalyzer puts them in 
  36. the best position to support current and future LANalyzer 
  37. customers.  "This agreement assures customers that continued 
  38. development of and support for LANalyzer, one of the world's 
  39. leading network analyzers since 1986, is in the best possible 
  40. hands," said Jain.  "NCC has established its technical 
  41. excellence in the WAN analysis field.  They use many of the 
  42. same specialized resellers through whom LANalyzer has been 
  43. sold, and have the hardware expertise to continue evolving 
  44. this product.

  46.     "In addition, this agreement allows us to focus more 
  47. closely on software-based solutions for distributed network 
  48. management and analysis of the NetWare environment," Jain 
  49. added.  "Through our NetWare Management System and LANalyzer 
  50. for Windows, we will continue to deliver the best possible 
  51. support to Novell's customers."

  54. said this agreement positions NCC to become the premier 
  55. supplier of LAN/WAN integrated testing platforms.  "Novell is 
  56. an excellent company to partner with," Wood said.  "We are

  58. Novell has established for the product.  LANalyzer continues 
  59. to be the premier LAN analyzer on the market and it is a 
  60. natural product extension for NCC.  Our customers are 
  61. continually moving forward with networking technology and the 
  62. acquisition of LANalyzer provides a clean convergence of 
  63. LAN/WAN internetwork integration that fits our customers 
  64. needs."

  69.     LANalyzer, a combination of specialized hardware and 
  70. analysis software, monitors network activity, diagnoses and 
  71. troubleshoots problems, and fine-tunes performance on 
  72. Ethernet or token-ring (4- and 16-Mbps) networks.  It 
  73. captures 100 percent of network traffic, decodes all seven 
  74. protocol layers for 18 distinct networking environments, and 
  75. displays information about protocol errors, interfering 
  76. traffic, and the network's physical integrity.

  78.     Key features include the Automated Troubleshooting System, 
  79. a set of more than 175 pre-programmed testing applications 
  80. designed to troubleshoot common problems and perform 
  81. maintenance tasks.  Tests are predefined; users select 
  82. criteria and parameters.  LANalyzer also allows users to 
  83. develop their own customized testing routines.

  86. configurable alarms and packet definitions, and simulates 
  87. network load conditions while simultaneously monitoring the 
  88. results.  It automatically recognizes individual protocols, 
  89. offers real-time displays and stores analysis data for later 
  90. evaluation.
